SMART 501c3 Application: Details

The SMART 501c3 Application has 4 Parts.  Each part includes focused questions that keep you on track to completed the application in the most efficient way.  Several questions throughout the application ask for explanations, in these situations the SMART 501c3 application allows you to type your explanation, or you can simply upload previously created word documents, PDF files, or new papers to answer the question.  Now that’s easy!  Best of all, if you get stuck or need help, a Nonprofit Foundry attorney is one click away.  When you complete all 4 parts, Nonprofit Foundry will convert your answers from our 501c3 Smart Application to IRS Form 1023.  A lawyer will then work with you to make need changes before your Form 1023 is sent to the IRS.

Part I : Organization Structure and History

You will start the SMART 501c3 Application with Part I, answering a few questions about your organizational structure (i.e. have you incorporated in a state?).  You will also answer questions about your organization’s bylaws.  Part I ends with a few questions about your organization’s history. If you have your organizational documents ready and digitized this section will be a breeze.  Expect to wrap this section up in 30 minutes or less.  If you run into problems you can always get support via the on-screen chat window.

 

 

Part II: Financial Data and Operations

You will probably find Part II the most difficult section.  If you have financial statements generated by your accounting software (i.e. Quickbooks, etc.).  You can upload those documents directly to the server on the 501c3 Smart Application. However, you may not have any financial statements ready and that’s ok too.  You can download and work with a custom designed templates that do all the calculations for you.  The second half of Part II provides you an opportunity to share information about your organization.  We have made these questions easier for you by adding probing questions to get you started.  Additionally, all the questions are divided by topic so you never feel overwhelmed.  And like Part I, if you run into problems you can always get support via the on-screen chat window.

 

 

Part III: Compensation and Member Benefits

This section goes very quickly.  Part III allows you to share information about your Board of Directors and employees.  Additionally, this part will ask you about the people that you serve and the benefits you provided.  You won’t be surprised to find the on-screen chat window if you get stuck or need help.

 

 

 

Part IV: Fundraising Activities and Specific Activity Question

SMART 501c3 Application  501c3 app parts 07 The completion time of this Part IV greatly depends on how many fundraising activities you have planned.  Part IV provides you an opportunity to share information about how and where you plan to fundraise for your nonprofit.  Last but not least, you will answer some mandatory questions about some of your specific activities that you and your organization currently engage in or plan to engage in the future.  And, yes there is on-screen chat support from a real attorney if you get stuck or need help.

 

 

Once you have completed Parts I-IV we take over.  An attorney from Nonprofit Foundry will review all of your answers and our team will follow-up with any additional questions that we might have.  Once we have all the necessary information you can expect to have your completed IRS Form 1023 from Nonprofit Foundry within about 2-4 weeks.
